Driving along I-25 in Colorado without any construction can be nerve-wracking; add in years-long construction, and it gets much worse.

I-25 North Express Lanes Project Between Berthoud & Mead Brings Accident Increase

Hundreds of thousands of travelers use I-25 on a monthly basis, at the very least. That's why the Colorado Department of Transportation is adding more lanes to the interstate; that means a lot of road construction; the data shows that drivers are not dealing with it very well.

Once the Mead to Berthoud portion of the I-25 North Express Lanes Project is complete, it will be first time there will be more than two lanes of traffic in each direction from Denver to Fort Collins.

Between the people that travel to Denver and back on a daily basis for work, the growing population in Northern Colorado, and the folks that want to check out Buc-ee's, there are lot of cars on the road between Berthoud and Mead (6 miles) where the I-25 project is happening.

I was recently on the interstate, headed to Denver and there was an accident right in that area that delayed me (and others) for well over 30 minutes; clearly, that is happening a lot. You have to feel for the folks in those wrecks, luckily there haven't been any fatalities involved.

According to 9News, CDOT is working hard to help keep drivers alert and safe, with wider shoulder, rumble strips, and devices to help reduce glare from oncoming headlights; the "hands-free device" law is helping as well.

Avoiding the Area You Can Avoid an Accident

With the project not expected to be complete until 2028, you might think about using Colorado Boulevard (CR 13) to the east, and Highway 287 to the west to travel north and south to the corresponding towns until it's all done. It'll take a little longer, but you could be saving time, by not being in an accident.
