Here's a shining example of why you should never, ever venture onto the ice of any frozen pond across Northern Colorado...

This week a dog was rescued from a pond in South Fort Collins, near Harmony Road, by a crew from the Poudre Fire Authority.

The call came in from multiple good samaritans that a medium to large dog was in the water, stuck in a hole in the ice, struggling to stay afloat and unable to pull itself back onto the ice and out of the water. Several bystanders were calling the dog, hoping they could coax it out by the time emergency responders arrived.

A firefighter highly trained in ice rescue ops put on a special suit and entered the freezing water, making it to the pup and helping him out of the hole in the ice.

The reminder from the Poudre Fire Authority is poignant: Call 911 and THROW - DON"T GO. Meaning... try to throw something to the person or pet in the water trapped in ice, rather than venturing out there on your own. To quote PFA, "Rescue attempts by bystanders often result in more people needing rescued, so stay on dry ground and call for help."

Which, thankfully, is exactly what happened in this instance. And is especially miraculous given that many of the bystanders were children who could have easily fallen through the ice themselves on their way out to save their four legged friend.

Poudre Fire Authority: heroes out there doing hero things. Thank you all for your continued service!
