The couple, both in their mid-80s, clicked on a "pop up" on their computer that said something about needing Microsoft technical support to fix a problem.
The con artist showed up at the door pretending to be that support person, and managed to get the couple to give him $30,000 to fix the "problem."
Con Artist Gets Greedy and Pays the Price
The saying "take the money and run" apparently didn't cross this con man's mind, as he hit the couple up again, a few days later, for an additional $70,000. The couple started out with every intention of getting him that money, too.
The couple had trouble getting such a large amount of money withdrawn at the banks that they went to, according to the press release; the banks told them it sounded like a con.
Next thing you know, the con man is telling them to get $70,000 in gold bars. Gold bars? This guy was bold.
The couple then contacted authorities about the whole situation; they then contacted the con artist. He arrived to supposedly get the gold, to only got arrested.
In October of 2024, Arashdeep Dhaliwal (DOB 01/20/1996) of California. took a plea agreement:
- 30 days in jail.
- 3 years supervised probation.
- Restitution of the $30,000.
