Is There a Romaine Shortage or am I just Having Bad Luck?
At the beginning of 2023, we told you about possible food shortages that may occur throughout the year. It seems that there may be a shortage of a certain type of lettuce happening in Colorado right now.
Over the past few weeks, I have been to many different grocery stores trying to find packs of romaine hearts and I have struck out all but one time. King Soopers, Safeway, Costco, you name it, I have been there looking for the three or five packs of romaine hearts. Every time but once I have come out of the store sans romaine lettuce.

That one time when I found what I was looking for, I nearly choked when I saw the price of lettuce. We needed it, so I paid the price, but it hurt. It was like paying the premium price for eggs all over again.
Why is Romaine Lettuce so Hard to Find?
In the last part of 2023 and in early 2023, crop disease and drought factored into the shortages from the lettuce growers in California. Since nearly 70 percent of the nation's lettuce comes from the Salinas Valley in California, most of us that utilize lettuce in our daily diet have been suffering.
Grow Your Own Lettuce
I feel like since spring is here in Colorado, it might be time for me to try my hand at growing my own lettuce in the garden. Sure, I will have to wait a while to eat the fruits of my labor, but I will know exactly where it is coming from. My garden.

Until then, I will continue my pursuit of finding the three and five-packs of romaine hearts at the grocery store. However, I am not entirely sure if I can stomach the high prices of the leafy greens at this point in time.
