I'm just going to jump into this article because I feel like I need to get the word out ASAP.

If you think toilets are the filthiest item in your home, you've got another thing coming, because they didn't even crack the top 5.

So what are the dirtiest items found in 82% of Northern Colorado homes? Let's take a look.

The first thing on the list is something I refuse to even allow into my house. Sponges. I can't help but cringe anytime I see someone using a dirty sponge to wipe off the kitchen counter.

According to an NSF study, over 75% of household sponges contain traces of coliform bacteria. What is that, you ask? Coliform is a type of E. Coli. When you mix wet, warm, and food residue, this stuff grows out of control.

So, only with love and light, please don't invite me over for dinner if you repeatedly use the same sponge day in and day out.

Next up on the list goes to... wait for it. On the list of the top 5 grossest items in your home, your toothbrush holder is holding strong in the number 4 spot. If this makes you gag, you aren't alone. Because I'm trying hard not to.

Lots of things might make your toothbrush holder gross, including mold and yeast from moisture, Staph (tiny skin flakes), and, once again, cofliorm is coming in hot.

So is brushing only making things worse? Should we just quit wasting our time? Asking for a friend.

Right down the middle at number 3, we've got cutting boards. Have you ever watched someone cut raw meat on a cutting board and then casually wipe it off with a dry rag? I have, and I haven't been back to my grandmother's house in years.

According to an NSF study, 18% of cutting boards tested positive for coliform. This stuff sucks.

Pet toys are said to be the second germiest thing in the average Northern Colorado home. This one confuses me because aren't dogs' mouths cleaner than human mouths?

Once again, according to NSF, a full 55% of dog toys tested positive for mold and yeast.

And the number one filthiest, germiest item found in most Northern Colorado homes isn't the toilet; it's your refrigerator handles.
