Today I learned something. Denver has a lesbian bar, and it’s the only one in town. What in the world?! It’s also one of only a few in the entire United States. And then, last week, out of the blue, The Pearl lesbian bar announced it would be shutting down forever. After some major changes, from ownership to event schedules, The Pearl concluded it just couldn’t continue.

That is, until the Denver community came together and donated to a GoFundMe set up to help the struggling bar. Currently, you can find The Pearl at the former Mercury Cafe on California Street in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. The Pearl has been at this location for a little over a year now after relocating.

After the closing announcement many patrons of the bar joined forces believing this Denver landmark needs to be protected and in turn raised over $75,000 via gofundme. While this amaount is such an amazing accomplishment the patrons sill are unsure of the long term future of the Pearl.

The original announcement of the closure was posted on Instagram and received more than 6,000 likes and 600 comments in just 24 hours, with patrons sharing sad notes, special memories from the past year, and asking how the LGBTQ+ community could help support The Pearl.

So, for the time being, The Pearl is still in business thanks to the loyal customers in Denver and the surrounding areas.
