Southeast Fort Collins has been plagued for weeks with a horrible smell. Duck Lake, which is right across from the Fort Collins Sanitation facility has been identified as the stinky source of the rotten smell.

After complaints, the water quality staff tested the water. They told The Coloradoan that the smell is because of low oxygen levels and decomposing algae.

Mark Sears, the city's Natural Area manger said the lake is shallow, which caused the floating pumps not to activate. Those pumps are used to oxygenate the water which helps the algae not decompose and smell.

The city is currently working to fix the smell and get the pumps working.
