Elk mating season in Colorado runs from mid-September to mid-October.

The mating season is referred to as the elk rut and it is when elk are the most aggressive. It is incredibly important to avoid being close to elk during this time. Experts say that you should maintain a distance of at least 75 feet.

Unfortunately, many people either do not do their research or do not care, putting themselves in dangerous situations.

A viral video is re-circulating from last year and it showcases that folks are not respecting an elk herd's space.

The elk herd is in a body of water and tourists are surrounding the elk in hopes of getting the perfect photo. They do not realize that they are cornering the elk and putting their lives in danger.

The video was taken on September 23 of last year and there were no reported injuries or major disturbances. The herd was remarkably patient.

I would say that this group of tourists was incredibly lucky.

In June, there were eight elk attacks in three days. Although it was rare for that time of the year, it is important to note that elk can be dangerous animals. Especially during their mating season.

Safety Tips During Elk Rut in Colorado

The city of Estes Park put together a great video and public service announcement regarding wildlife in the area. Their message is simple:  Keep Wildlife Wild.

In the video, they have a great tip.

If you hold out your thumb with your arm fully extended and you can not cover the animal you see entirely, then you are too close.
