If you are driving around Colorado with expired tags on your vehicle, you might want to get that taken care of as soon as you possibly can. More and more law enforcement agencies in the state of Colorado are cracking down on expired tags, and if you have to commute to the Denver Metro area, your chances of getting busted could be greater soon.

Denver Police Launch Expired Tag Crackdown

Starting on November 15, drivers in the city and county of Denver who are driving with expired registration or temporary tags can face a $95 fine from the Denver Police Department.

The Denver Police Department has announced a one-month enforcement period that will be solely focused on looking for expired vehicle registration and expired temporary tags on automobiles in the city of Denver from November 15 to December 15.

Fifth Expired Tag Campaign Since 2024

This will be the Denver Police Department's fifth enforcement operation focusing on these two types of tags since July 2024. According to the Facebook post for the Denver Police Department, a similar campaign last year resulted in a total of 656 citations for either expired registration or expired temporary tags.

Important Rules on Expired Tags in Colorado

The Denver Police Department is reminding drivers that there are certain criteria that you need to be aware of when it comes to expired registration or temporary tags:

  • Temporary tags have no grace period after expiration.
  • Vehicle registration has a 30-day grace period.
  • New vehicle registration must be done in person at the DMV.
  • Registration renewals can be done online or at a DMV Kiosk.
