Earthquake Shakes Colorado This Morning
Colorado experiences a wide range of weather events, from blizzards and tornadoes to flash floods and intense hailstorms. Every once in a while, the Centennial State is even shaken up by a random earthquake - which most recently happened on the morning of June 13, 2025.
According to official reports from the U.S. Geological Survey, Friday morning, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred four miles outside of Dacono. The USGS said the earthquake took place around 6:18 a.m. Earthquakes happen when there are sudden movements of the Earth along a fault, which causes shaking at the surface.
Approximately 150 residents in the area felt the ripple effects from the uncommon phenomenon. Several locals reported hearing loud booms in parts of Thornton and Erie during the time of the quake.
No damage was recorded from the rare earthquake.
Based on data collected from the Colorado Geological Survey, there have been more than 700 recorded earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher since 1867 in the state. Most of Colorado's earthquakes are never felt.
