How To Keep Your Pup Cool During This Northern Colorado Heat Wave

It's hot this week. Like in the hundreds. And it looks like it isn't coming down for a while. If you're a dog walker, this heatwave is dangerous for your pups, too.

Here are some ways to keep your furry family member safe and comfortable while the world melts outside.

Avoid hot concrete on walks

There was a time when I thought the pads on the bottom of my dog's feet were completely indestructible. How wrong I was. As a human, I know that walking barefoot on hot concrete (think going to the pool) can be really painful, and guess what? It's also painful for your dog.

Of course, you don't want to keep your dog cooped up in the house all summer long, so what can you do? Try walking only on cool grass rather than the hot street or sidewalk. You can also buy protective dog shows. Yes, those are a thing.

Freeze up some treats

Peanut butter is our dog's favorite food group. So we jumped on Amazon and bought a lick mat. Spread some peanut butter over the mat and freeze it. Maggie (our pup) loves this treat. Also, you can freeze some low-sodium chicken broth into ice cubes.

Dogs can also eat cool dog-safe fruit like blueberries and watermelon.

Everything Water

It's a no-brainer that it's so important to keep fresh cold water out for your dog, but why not go a step further and buy a tiny kids' pool for your dog to relax in? Tiny plastic pools are cheap and easy to move around, and your dog will be in heaven all summer long.
