Ok, confession time: I was never much of a science person while I was in school. That’s how I ended up with a Liberal Arts Degree and a minor in French, because I make great life choices. But that’s also probably why S.T.E.M .-S.T.E.A.M. (Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math) Day exists. So that even those of us who’ve decided that test tubes are best utilized when stuck on your fingers to make them clink together can appreciate all we’ve learned about our world. And, more importantly, to encourage those mini-scientists out there who will hopefully get us Millenium Falcon-level spaceships one day.

So, here’s three things you can do today (November 8th) to celebrate all things science right here in Fort Collins.

1) Donate to CSU’s Little Shop of Physics

The Little Shop of Physics is a grant and donation-based organization based out of CSU. For twenty-five years, their mission has been to “find creative ways to share the wonder of science with people of all ages, backgrounds and interests.” They hold school visits and teacher workshops, produce an educational TV show called “Everyday Science,” and host a popular open house on February 23rd that lets students, teachers, and the interested passer-by take part in hands-on experiments. The open house is VERY worth it, in past years you’ve gotten to play with lasers and look at constellation models.

The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery has exhibits on everything from music, history, natural science and much more! They’ve also got a great dome theater if you don’t feel like making the drive to see the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s IMAX films. There’s a lecture in the dome theater tomorrow by Dr. Shane Larson called “The Cosmos in a Heartbeat” for only $10. It’s got to be great, because it’ll be like stargazing, but warm.

But ok, maybe science really, REALLY isn’t your thing in any way, shape or form. I’m not here to judge, we’ve all been personally victimized by chemistry at some point in our lives. So if that’s the case, why don’t you go look into The Gregory Allicar Museum of Art at CSU?  The museum has artifacts and art from across the Americas, the Renaissance, and across the African continent, and all for the low, low price of $0. The place is small, too, if you’re only feeling like bite-sized bits of culture instead of a day-long odyssey that ends with you rocking in the Egyptian exhibit because you can’t find the exit or a bathroom.
