Police Warn Parents About A Dangerous Feature on Kid’s Phones

If your child has an iPhone, police all over the country are warning parents about a feature that should be turned off. Not only should this feature on an Apple phone be turned off for kids, but you might want to turn this feature off for yourself if you don't want random people possibly getting your contact information.

CBS News says police departments are warning parents about a new feature in iOS17 on Apple iPhones that can give contact information to anyone who puts their Apple devices near your child's phone.

The iOS17 feature is called NameDrop and it is set to be defaulted in the ON position after the software update. This will share contact information with someone just by the phones being in close proximity to one another.

How Do I Turn The NameDrop Feature Off On My Phone?

Turning this feature off on your iPhone is quite simple. In just a couple of clicks, you and your child can be protected from people who may want to get your contact information. Here is what you need to do.

Click on the "Settings" icon:

Then scroll down to the AirDrop tab:

When you access the AirDrop tab in iOS17, you will see the Bringing Devices Together option:

Turn it off:

Simple as that. Police say that this setting should be disabled on all iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices.

They have their email and we've seen how the bad guys, the pedophiles and whatnot really take advantage of email, and phone numbers for texting. They really take advantage of that. And God forbid they decided to use the home address to visit or salk even deeper.

Said Alan Crowetz of Infostream in an interview with CBS Philadelphia. So if you or your child have an Apple product like an iPhone or an iPad, it would be best to err on the side of caution and turn this feature off.
