Denver City Councilwoman Amanda Sandoval is working to rename Columbus Park in Denver.

According to The Denver Channel, Sandoval wants to change the park's name to "La Raza," which locals have called it ever since Denver's Chicano movement in the 1970s.

"Everything is in a name...I cannot have Columbus being represented in my community," Sandoval told the station. "And when people why wonder why it was named that [La Raza], they can figure out the history...the naming of something lives on forever."

Her proposal comes in the wake of the George Floyd protests, which have already inspired Stapleton, a Denver neighborhood named after a former mayor with KKK ties, to change its name.

In order to make La Raza, which means "the people," the new name of Columbus Park, Sandoval will have to submit at least 300 signatures to Denver Parks and Recreation.

If that happens, the motion can move on to city council for approval.
