In a Twitter post, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced that, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Eagle Valley Land Trust, it would be creating a new 488-acre state park in Garfield County. Sweetwater Lake is located north of the Glenwood Springs/Dotsero area.

'Sweetwater Lake is a hidden gem, both as a destination and gateway to the Flat Top Wilderness,'  Dan Gibbs, Executive Director, Colorado Department of Natural Resources, said in a release from the State of Colorado.

In the news release from the State of Colorado, Governor Polis said, 'This is the first of its kind partnership in Colorado to create a state park on U.S. Forest Service land, and we look forward to working with our partners and Coloradans with the ultimate goal of adding Sweetwater Lake to Colorado’s world-class state park system for fun, conservation, education, and to support job growth  for the region.'

Polis also said there is potential to add a campground within the state park, which is set to be completed by June 1, 2022. Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be working to update facilities and offer recreational services.

Sweetwater Lake is the second state park to open since Polis has been in office, the State of Colorado said, with the opening of Fishers Peak in 2020.
