Many areas and towns in Northern Colorado are situated in Right to Farm counties. Colorado overall is a right-to-farm state. This means that farmers and ranchers are protected and cannot be considered a nuisance to the general public.

I fully support the right to farm in Colorado. However, there are just some animals that do not belong in a suburban neighborhood. While it may be a dream to own a farm and live the farm life with all the animals that come with this lifestyle, some of these animals can encroach on your neighbors.

One of these animals is a rooster. You see, I live in one of these suburban neighborhoods with a homeowners association and one of my neighbors has a rooster in their backyard. I've heard some of my neighbors talk about the rooster and you can just tell by the tone of their voice, they are kind of annoyed by it, which I can understand since this rooster must be broken or something. This particular rooster crows at all hours of the day and on numerous occasions, well into the late evening hours. Meaning if you want to enjoy the crisp nights of fall and have your windows open, you better be prepared to hear the rooster an maybe lose a little bit of sleep.

Are Rooster Prohibited in Johnstown, Colorado?

Johnstown residents may look up if roosters are prohibited within the town limits. Some may say yes, while others say no. Being the curious person I am, I looked into it. According to a municipal ordinance from 2021, it appears that Johnstown may have tried to ban roosters from the town limits. This ordinance is posted as 2021-212, however, the official municipal code for Johnstown mentions nothing regarding roosters.

Since there was a proposed ordinance in 2021, but nothing in the official municipal code, I reached out to the Johnstown Town Clerk, Hannah Hill. She was kind enough to give me all of the information I needed. Hill informed me that Johnstown currently does not have any code that prohibits roosters within the town limits.

If you happen to live in the town limits of Johnstown and were wondering if you can have a rooster, the answer is yes you can.
