A Boulder County sheriff's commander accidentally shot himself in the thigh during routine practice at a law-enforcement firing range this week.

The commander, who has not been named, fired a ball round from a .45-caliber handgun as he was taking it out of its holster Thursday morning. Sheriff's deputies provided first aid.

The commander didn't immediately realize he had shot himself and continued target practice. Moments later, he notified the firing range's officer that he had accidentally shot himself.

The shooting happened at the Longmont Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff's Office Firing Range and Training Facility at 10916 Weld County Road 5.
