If you love bacon (like any normal person does), I feel bad having to deliver this piece of bad news to you - bacon and other processed meats cause cancer, and red meat probably contributes to it, too.

From 800 studies, scientists from the World Health Organization conclude that you face a real risk of colon, stomach, and other cancers if you eat a great amount of processed meat, putting processed meats in the same danger category as smoking or asbestos.

While the North American Meat institute calls the report "dramatic and alarmist," Dr. S. Lindsey Davis from the University of Colorado Hospital, who specializes in gastrointestinal cancers, says, "the important take away from it is we now have this link," though the study doesn't tell us how much is too much.

"Really the most important point from my perspective," says Davis, "it just reinforces that vital need for colorectal cancer screening."
