STAY ALERT: Colorado Included In Data Breach, Affects 3 Billion
A lot of our personal information is online. Like nearly every other state, Colorado requires residents to undergo a background check before they can be employed.
Personal information such as date of birth, social security number, and more is needed to perform the background check.
Unfortunately, one of the biggest background-checking companies across the globe was just hacked. This means that your personal information could be floating around the dark web.
Colorado Personal Information Leaked
Jerico Pictures was recently hacked by a ground called USDoD. The hackers stole names, social security numbers, and addresses from the company. Nearly 3 billion people have been affected, including Colorado residents.
Due to the leak, a class action lawsuit has been filed against the background check company.
Mashable says that the information that was breached was up for sale on the dark web for $3.5 million.
This is extremely concerning considering that the data that was leaked can lead to a massive amount of fraud.
What You Should Do in Colorado Right Now
We recommend that you reach out to any employers, past or present, and ask what background-check company they used in order to complete your background check.
Then, we also recommend keeping a close eye on your credit line. Additionally, I suggest using a security app to monitor for any new lines of credit or unusual activity.
I use LifeLock. It is an ID theft detector. I also have Credit Karma which can analyze any cards or accounts that may be opened.
