Why #14 Will Be Retired in All Colorado State University Sports
This will be the last season we will see the number 14 on a Colorado State football uniform. Tory Horton currently wears the number. Horton is one of the best Colorado State players in history and we are incredibly excited to see him cap off an amazing collegiate career this season.
Despite how great Horton is and how proud of him we are, he is not the reason why the number 14 will officially be retired at the end of the season.
#14 Will Be Retired Across All Colorado State University Sports
The Colorado State Rams will be retiring #14 for all sports this year to honor Lt. Colonel John Mosley.
Lt. Colonel Mosley was Colorado State's first black student-athlete. Lt. Colonel Mosley passed away in 2015, but his legacy will live on with Colorado State until the end of time.
Lt. Colonel Mosley earned a degree in 1943 and immediately joined the armed forces and was a proud member of the Tuskegee Airmen.
He and his men flew in combat missions bravely during World War II.
Lt. Colonel Mosley Is An Inspiration For Students at CSU
Lt. Colonel Mosley has been an inspiration for the university ever since he graduated. In 2011, Colorado State University created the Lt. Col. John W. Mosley Student-Athlete Mentoring Program.
Here is how the university describes the program
... is designed to assist student-athletes by serving as a resource while strengthening time management skills, encouraging academic success, enhancing leadership opportunities, and creating a sense of belonging and connection to the campus and its surrounding community.
#14 will officially be retired at Colorado State's Ag Day game on September 7. All current student-athletes will keep their number until their eligibility ends.
