Your dog doesn't have to be a K9 to help Longmont police catch criminals. In fact, even your chihuahua can be a crime fighter!

Longmont Police Services are calling all residents who regularly walk their dogs in the city to join their Dog Walker Watch program, which successfully helped with several suspicious reports from dog walkers last summer and aims to encourage dog walkers to serve as "extra eyes and ears" for law enforcement.

Examples of suspicious behavior include people walking through backyards in an area you know they do not live, looking in parked cars, or a person sitting in a vehicle outside a residence that isn't usually there.

Participants in the Dog Walker Watch program don't have to do anything different in their daily routine - they simply go about their day, and report anything suspicious they may witness.

An informational training meeting for the Dog Walker Watch program will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Longmont Fire Station 3, located at 1000 Pace. The training will teach residents to be observant and the steps to take when they encounter a suspicious situation. All dogs should be left at home for this meeting, and there is no required time commitment for the program other than attending initial training.

Each meeting attendee who signs up for the program will receive a Dog Walker Watch bandanna for their dog.
