You won't believe how windy it got in the Colorado mountains yesterday.
Just after 7:30 p.m. last night the weather station on Monarch Pass recorded a wind gust of 148 mph. Hurricane winds can reach 150 mph, ans that is a Category 5. The gust will not be considered official until the National Weather Service can review the data and check the weather station to ensure there was not a malfunction. The weather station on Monarch Pass sits just over 12,000 feet in elevation.
According to the National Weather Service, gusts of 119 mph were recorded near Telluride.
Meanwhile, I-25 was closed down for a couple hours last night in South Denver over fears the Ikea sign would blow over. It did not and the road was re-opened.
High winds yesterday morning caused power outages and knocked down tree limbs near Estes Park. Power was out for all of the Allenspark area south of Estes Park, along Highway 72. Power was lost was also lost around Glen Haven. At nearby Mary’s Lake Campground, gusts reached 90 – 100 miles per hour, and were so strong that a truck’s windows were blown out.
