The City of Fort Collins is asking for your help to name a new natural area in east Fort Collins. This 40-acre natural area is located on the south side of Horsetooth Road between Ziegler and Strauss Cabin Road. It is owned and managed by the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department.

 Guidelines for Naming:

  • Names that reflect the area’s ecological features and habitat type are given highest priority.
  • If using wildlife in the name, it should be a species that frequents the area.
  • If suggesting a plant name, the plant should be native and predominant to the site.
  • Anonymous submittals are fine.
  • Only clearly written submittals will be considered.
  • Submittals will not be accepted by telephone or voice mail.
  • Suggested names must be received by May 15, 2015.

How to Submit a Name

1. Email to Natural Areas Education and Outreach Coordinator, Sue Kenney, skenney@fcgov.com. Print your suggested name in subject line.

2. Clearly print or type the suggested name or names on a sheet of paper and send it to Natural Areas Names, Natural Areas Department, City of Fort Collins, Box 580, Fort Collins, CO 80522.

3. Bring it to the Natural Areas Department at 1745 Hoffman Mill Road during regular business hours, Monday- Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers Needed

The Natural Areas Department is in the process of restoring the site by creating wetlands, a small pond, and shoreline habitat that will support a diversity of birds and other wildlife on the former gravel mining pit. Volunteers are helping with this effort.
