At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, Windsor will be holding a grand opening ceremony for the town's brand new, outdoor pickleball courts. Located in Main Park, the six courts took the place of underutilized hockey rinks, that were converted at the suggestion of local pickleballers who needed a place to play. More than 30 players collectively donated $5,000 to assist with construction costs, and also physically helped with the transformation process. The ribbon cutting ceremony is open to anyone interested in coming out to take a peek at the park's newest addition, and following the event, the courts will also be open for free play.

So now there's courts in town, but just what is pickleball? Described as a fast-paced paddle sport for all ages, pickleball incorporates elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong all together in one, fun and competitive game. It can be played both indoors and outdoors, and as teams of doubles or singles. Besides needing paddles and a net, players also need an actual pickleball, which is a special ball with holes in it, fairly similar to a whiffle ball.

The new courts will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, free of charge. However, come Spring 2017, a court reservation process will be implemented, as well as usage fees.
