Who Are the Richest People in America?
The rich keep getting richer, at least according to Forbes. America’s 400 wealthiest people now reportedly have a combined net worth of a $1.7 trillion, up from last year’s meager $1.5 trillion figure. Don't know about you, but we've got like 26 bucks.
Anyway, so who made the list?
The three richest should come as no surprise: Bill Gates ($66 billion), Warren Buffet ($46 billion) and Larry Ellison ($41 billion) comfortably maintained their first-, second- and third-place slots, with an average of $7.3 billion added to their net worth this year. Ellison experienced the largest increase of any other person ranked on this year’s super-rich list, with a reported bump of $8 billion.
Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg slipped off the money tree a bit this year to the tune of about $8.1 billion, the biggest financial dump on the list. However, he still has $2.5 billion more in his pocket than he did two years ago, so he's probably okay.
Believe it or not, the majority of the people on this year’s list actually earned their fortunes from the ground up (70 percent), while four out of the 20 first timers established their wealth through inheritance including this year's richest first timer, Laurene Powell Jobs (Steve Jobs’ widow)—worth $11 billion.
The entry barrier for this year’s list was $1.1 billion, nearly six times what it was back in 1982 when the Forbes 400 was initially published.
