90 years ago this wonderful family tradition first hit the streets of New York.
THE HISTORY OF THE MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE
- In the beginning it was the Christmas Parade
- It started with first generation immigrants parading animals from the Central Park Zoo to the Hareld Square Store
- 1927 Felix the Cat made his debut (the first giant balloon)
- 1934 Mickey Mouse appears in the parade to an audience of one-million people
- 1942-1945 the parade is put on hold to save rubber during the war
- 1947 the parade is featured in the iconic family film Miracle on 24th Street
- 1952 the parade is aired on NBC, previously it only aired locally
- 1971 Tom the Turkey opens the parade, Santa Claus ends it (still the tradition today)
