90 years ago this wonderful family tradition first hit the streets of New York.

THE HISTORY OF THE MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

    • In the beginning it was the Christmas Parade
    • It started with first generation immigrants parading animals from the Central Park Zoo to the Hareld Square Store
    • 1927 Felix the Cat made his debut (the first giant balloon)
    • 1934 Mickey Mouse appears in the parade to an audience of one-million people
    • 1942-1945 the parade is put on hold to save rubber during the war
    • 1947 the parade is featured in the iconic family film Miracle on 24th Street
  • 1952 the parade is aired on NBC, previously it only aired locally
  • 1971 Tom the Turkey opens the parade, Santa Claus ends it (still the tradition today)

You can enjoy this year's parade with your monkey bread and coffee on NBC Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27th, 2014 at 9 a.m. all time zones.
