A train derailed just before lunchtime on Sunday in Timnath, affecting at least 9 cars.

Dispatch received a call reporting the derailment at 11:53 a.m. Sunday, which occurred near Bethke Elementary School in Timnath. At least 9 Great Western cars travelled off the track, some resting on their sides on a track near 5100 School House Drive, Poudre Fire Authority said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.

"There is never a best-case scenario, when it comes to train derailments," said Poudre Fire Authority spokeswoman Madeline Noblett. "However, in this instance, it was fortunate that people weren't injured and that surrounding homes weren't damaged."

Poudre Fire Authority, PVH/UC Health Emergency Medical Services professionals, and other agencies responded to the scene.

Citizens were questioning what the sand spilling out of some of the train cars was used for; the Coloradoan's Jason Pohl confirmed via Twitter that the sand is the type that is intended for fracking activities.
