The Town of Windsor has received a request from an oilfield company to build a place to store explosives and radioactive materials near the Budweiser Events Center.

A Houston, TX company has applied for a town permit to build a small storage facility east of I-25 and north of Crossroads Blvd. The company uses explosive and radioactive materials to explore gas and oil deposits and map them.

“It’s a standard practice in the industry,” said Windsor Director of Planning Joseph P. Plummer. “We just haven’t had any experience with it in Windsor.”

Plummer said the state health department regulates the use and storage of radioactive materials, including setting standards for exposure, while the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms regulates explosives.
