It was on Sunday, the 7th of October, 2001. Shells began to rain down in the Middle East as we began our war on terror with Operation Enduring Freedom; originally called Operation Infinite Justice.  President Bush warned us it would be a long process but hasn't it been long enough?

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced last week that three units were set to deploy as "part of the upcoming rotation of forces operating in Afghanistan."

The scheduled rotation involves elements of one infantry brigade combat team (IBCT) with roughly 2,000 personnel; elements of two combat aviation brigades -- one with roughly 1,450 personnel and one with roughly 2,100 personnel to rotate in fall 2013 in support of the combatant commander’s mission requirements. DoD will continue to announce major deployments as they are approved.

The deploying units include:

  • 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.
  • 1st Cavalry Division Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas
  • 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Riley, Kansas

Here's my deal:  If this war on terror is going to be "permanent" then just tell us and let us get used to it. Let's be honest, this "war on terror" will never end. They have hated us for centuries and will continue to do so.  What's the point?  Are we going to convince them to change?  So the solution is to keep sending in more troops to get killed?

For what?

I read an article on AP yesterday that was dated February 12, 2013.  In the article, President Obama has vowed to have half of the 66,000 troops home by late 2014 leaving around 34,000 behind to train Afghan police and military forces to handle the Taliban insurgents. Didn't President Bush say the same about training the Afghans to defend themselves a long time ago?  Training is now going on to the tune of about a decade.

Enough is enough! Let the Afghans sort it out; they don't want us there anyway. The Taliban is less than a shell of what it was and are no longer the threat they once were. Enough lives lost, enough money spent, enough is enough! BRING THEM HOME!

To the thousands heading over to the sandbox, we will keep your families safe and godspeed home.
