The Reason Why I Don’t Drink – Brian’s Blog

My name is Brian Gary. I am the morning guy on a country radio station and I do not drink. Weird huh? I used to be pretty good at drinking, in fact if there was an Olympics for drinking I would have brought home the gold several times. I gave up booze years ago and I will tell you why.

I know drinking is part of our culture and I understand people having a few to take the edge off the day. I don't understand getting plastered though. Booze makes you lose your inhibitions and makes you do and say things you wouldn't if you had a clear filter. Waking up and learning what you did the night before isn't always a joy and it's hell on the people you share your life with.

Years ago when I was still getting loaded regularly, I was doing a remote broadcast from a local watering hole. I was sitting there pounding them down with a friend when a lady walked up to my table with her daughter and asked if I would play a special song for her daughter the next day. I said I would. The lady then turned to my friend and asked if I would even remember talking to her. That was a turning point in my life. I did not want to be seen as a drunk who wouldn't remember meeting someone, I wanted to be more than that. Anyone can be a drunk. I decided I wanted to be something else. I thank that lady to this day. I remember everything I do now and am still an idiot. That is the fun part. Go ahead and raise a toast this holiday season but keep your senses. No one admires a drunk.
