The Joy Of Building A Fort – Brian’s Blog

One of the joys of being a kid was building forts. Can you remember getting all the blankets in the living room putting them over all the furniture and camping out underneath them like a tent? We have always done this to escape. We build blanket forts and tree houses and snow forts and anything to escape the world. There are days, even now as an adult, that I want to just get in a fort and hide. We felt so safe in our homemade safe houses.

Yesterday I came home to huge box in the basement that Zander and Zayden and my daughter Vanessa were turning into a clubhouse. They set up the box in the middle of the living room. The inside was decked out with pillows, blankets and snacks. Zander played in it all day long until school and then was right back in it after school. We spend hundreds of dollars on toys and yet a box is the greatest thing he could ever have. When you get to use your imagination you are set free. He found his freedom in a cardboard box yesterday and enjoyed it until he eventually passed out with his arm out his window watching the Rugrats movie. It was such a beautiful sight. I can't wait to go home and play today.
