Last night was an important night in our household. I taught my grandson Zander how to call 911. I think this is something we all need to teach the young ones.

I was watching the grandchildren last night and felt a strange sensation in my chest. I thought "oh no, not another heart attack" and then it went away quickly. It was just a freak heartbeat that caused me to panic just a bit. I then started thinking about what would happen if it was just me and the boys and I did really have a heart attack or some other medical emergency. I have had a history of some serious medical issues so it is not unreasonable to think something could occur. What would happen? I would be out cold and these 2 little boys would be sitting there unable to help me and be on their own until another family member would arrive home.

I looked Zander in the eye and told him we needed to have a serious talk. I told him this will probably never happen but if he ever sees papa fall or seem unable to talk to him he should call 911. I gave him the phone and made sure he knew how to push the button for phone and then for a keyboard and then to push 9-1-1 and "call". I told him to just answer whatever question he is asked and to tell them his papa's name. I had him do it over and over so we were both sure he knew what to do. I also told him we never ever do this unless it is an absolute emergency.

I felt a lot better knowing he knows what to do and we bonded over the fact that he could help me if I needed him. We all need to do this.
