The National Park Service has given final approval to lower the number of bison near the north rim of the park down to approximately 200 over the next 3 to 5 years. The reason for the culling of the bison in the park is that the animals are damaging the natural and cultural resources according to park officials. Currently, there are about 600 bison that roam the area. If left unchecked, the population could reach 1,500 within a decade. The workings of this are still being set up. Officials are looking for volunteers that are physically fit and skilled with firearms to reduce the bison numbers.

The heads and hides of the bison would go to federal, state agencies and tribes.
