Growing up I was blessed to have a lot of mother figures in my life. Although I was never extremely close to my maternal mother I always knew she loved me. So did my grandmothers, step-mom, my god mother and so many others great women who played a big role in who I am today. Thanks to them, and happy Mother's Day! Here are my favorite Mama songs...

My Woman, My Woman, My Wife

    Marty Robbins

I asked listeners to call in and tell me their favorite Mother's Day songs, and two people said this was it for them. Having two children who have a great mother, I can relate.

    Mama Knows

    Shenandoah

Is it a sixth sense or the eyes in the back of her head? Yup, Mom knew about the cigarettes and the first love. I think we can all remember mom catching us doing something and still don't know how she did it!

    Somebody's Hero

    Jamie O'Neal

This song is a beautiful tribute to a loving mother throughout her lifetime. It starts with the mother taking care of the daughter when she is young, and ends with the mother in a nursing home, and the daughter going to visit her, and take care of her. The way it should be!

    I Hope You Dance

    Lee Ann Womack

While this song doesn't specifically mention mothers, it does have a wish that can be from a mother to a child, hoping that they will always go for their dreams.

    So Much Like My Dad

    George Strait

“Mom, can we talk?” George is as good at anyone at delivering a song that’s essentially a conversation set to music. In this case, it’s a mother/son chat as he tries to figure out exactly why his own household is falling apart. I have had this exact conversation before with my mom, and it will always hold a special spot in my heart.

    Mama Tried

    Merle Haggard

Perhaps the hardest part of the job for mothers: You can do everything right, and the kid insists on messing up anyway. Isn't that the truth. But, no matter what, mama still will always love you too!

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

    Glen Campbell & Steve Wariner

“There ought to be a hall of fame for mamas.” Well, there’s not, but there is this nifty little duet built around the psychologies of birth, breast feeding and teaching life lessons. A great mama song!

    I O U

    Jimmy Dean

The biggest investments a mother makes are her time and her heart. If she’s doing her job the right way, all she asks for in return is love. We could all make a list as long as Jimmy Dean's of the things we owe to our mama, I know I could!

    Coat of Many Colors

    Dolly Parton

One of Dolly Parton's most popular songs. It reflects on the true story of the coat her mother made for her when she was growing up. It may have been made from multi-colored pieces of cloth, but it held within the love that her mother had for her. Great tune!

    The Baby

    Blake Shelton

This song never fails to make me cry. Blake Shelton sings about the love the son has for his mom, and wanting to be with her when he hears she's on her deathbed, only to find out when he arrives that he's too late is heartbreaking. I can see myself in every verse of this song, and that is why it's my number one mama song.
