Killed In Action in on 14 November in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, of wounds received from small arms fire while on dismounted combat operations. Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Spears was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron-163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
