On the first Sunday night of 2015, Michael Ray Rodriquez got into an argument with his girlfriend while at Paradise Billiards in Evans. Mr. Rodriquez would have turned 40 this May; a nail gun, his attitude, and the police prevented that from happening.

Police were called to Paradise Billiards in Evans on January 4th, 2015, due to a patron assaulting his girlfriend and brandishing a gun. The officers, who had arrived from the Evans and LaSalle police departments, came in and tried to get Michael Ray Rodriguez to calm down and drop what appeared to be a gun. Rodriquez ended up pointing the gun at the officers, who in turn opened fire on him. The two officers got off 11 shots. Seven shots missed Mr. Rodriquez, four did not. Rodriquez later died of his wounds.

The 'gun' that Rodriguez had was a Hilti nail gun, that he'd retrieved from his vehicle. The thing looks pretty scary to me, too. I probably would have emptied my weapon to keep him from using his, as well.

The officers were under investigation, but have been cleared of any wrong-doing.

From the Weld District Attorney’s press release:

“…because they reasonably believed it was necessary to defend themselves and others from Mr. Rodriguez’s threatened use of deadly physical force.”
