A man doused himself in gas and lit himself on fire in Lafayette late yesterday
afternoon. He apparently wanted an audience for the horrific event.

Lafayette Police told 9NEWS the man drove around the Walmart parking lot on US 287 and shouted at bystanders to watch him.

Then he doused himself and the car with gasoline, igniting both. He also got out of the car while on fire and began walking around.

Bystanders tried to help but said the man was making comments about not wanting to be put out.

The man's name and condition have not been released. He was airlifted to a hospital.
