It's hard to believe any town in America would say "no" to a monument in their park. Milford Michigan did originally but have now changed their minds.

Changed their minds?

Why was the "Battlefield Cross" monument/memorial not approved on the very first day it was brought to the attention of the Village council? The members who did not want the monument in their park said it was a matter of the gun and that the city park was not a place to have that type of monument.

Because it had a gun as part of the monument.

Yes, a gun!

If you are not familiar with the Battlefield Cross, it's normally an M-16 for the modern day version, turned upside down inside a pair of boots with dog tags hanging from the rifle to honor someone who was Killed In Action. The idea dates back to the Civil War when they would do this to identify bodies before they were removed from the battlefield.

Isn't a gun, pair if boots and dog tags sort of symbolic of "freedom" for those of us who live in the United States of America?

Milford, Michigan resident Frank Kidd, who spoke at the council meeting and who's son's casket is featured on this story had this to say,

They used a gun, a pair of boots and a helmet just like the memorial that we are trying to set up - Milford, Michigan resident Frank Kidd, who lost his son in Iraq eight years ago, said during the council meeting about the fallen soldiers memorial.

Mr. Kid used the term "they" for past and current members of the Armed Forces including his own son, Marine Cpl. Mark D. Kidd who was Killed In Action by a sniper on 25 January 2007 at the age of 26 while working a checkpoint near Fallujah, Iraq.  He was assigned to the Marine Force Reserve's 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment and had served two tours in Iraq.

The Battlefield Cross will now be erected next to a Veterans Memorial they already have in the park. The monument will stand about four feet high and sit atop a four foot base and the cost, which had already been raised in 90 days, is right at $12,000.
