Map Shows How Drunk Colorado is Compared to Other States

These maps everyone are making these days are starting to get a little out of control. No one cares what Bieber song each state listens to the most or what state eats the most hummus. One of the maps that has been around since long before they become cool is also one of the most awesome… The map of the drunkest states!

Every year the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism ranks states for alcohol consumption based on what’s called “apparent” per capita alcohol consumption. I have no clue what that means, but Esquire explains it well:

Since the NIAAA is most concerned with how much actual alcohol we’re consuming, they distill the data to gallons of pure ethanol. Healthy People 2020, a government organization that sets wellness goals for our populace, has declared the “national objective” of no more than 2.1 gallons per person, per year.

In layman’s terms, that’s about 25 bottles of whiskey, 88 bottles of wine, or 320 bottles of beer. Actual average American consumption was 2.33 gallons, up just a hair over last year.

The national average is 2.33 gallons a year per person. Colorado is the tenth drunkest state with each person drinking 2.76 gallons of booze every year. That’s nothing compared to the drunkards in New Hampshire who guzzle down 4.65 gallons per year, the most of any state by far! Oh, and if booze offends you, you don’t have to go far to get away from it… Our neighbors to the west, Utah, are the least drunk only drinking 1.37 gallons each per year.
