Every 90 seconds, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving accidents. This is a pattern that needs to stop. On October 10, Northern Colorado is invited to come together and take a stand to end drunk driving within our community at the Walk Like MADD 5K.

The Walk Like MADD 5K strives to both raise awareness and funds to help eliminate drunk driving all across the nation. It will be taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Promontory Park in Greeley.

Donations and funds that are raised throughout these 5K events allow MADD staff and volunteers to be better prepared for handling drunk driving situations and all parties involved. The staff provides emotional support to victims who have been affected from a drunk driving accident, as well as assisting with medical and legal struggles that may follow. With the hope of deterring inebriated drivers from being on the road and catching the dangerous ones who already are, the staff also works with police officers to enforce sobriety checkpoints. Working with state and local legislators, they attempt to fix loopholes in pre-existing laws, such assessing the ignition interlock system for DUI offenders. MADD is also currently studying two new technological devices that would come into play if a driver were to be pulled over having a blood-alcohol content of above .08.

Whether you participate as a walker, team captain, donor or volunteer, you can help to make a difference in eliminating drunk driving in Colorado. You don't want to be on the other end of the line when an officer calls to tell you that one of your loved ones has been involved in a drunk driving accident– support the fight and Walk Like MADD.
