Jason Aldean, ‘Take a Little Ride’ – Lyrics Uncovered

Everything about ‘Take a Little Ride, from the lyrics to the melody, sounds just like a Jason Aldean hit should. That’s exactly what the song’s three writers — Dylan Altman, Rodney Clawson and Jim McCormick — were hoping for when they turned in their demo after penning the song.

“When we wrote that song, it was pretty cool,” Clawson tells Taste of Country of ‘Take a Little Ride.’ “People always ask, ‘What do you start with?’ Dylan had that guitar lick that kicks the song off. He had that, and he was playing that. He had a little bit of a melody for the chorus. He didn’t have any words; he just had that melody that kind of paralleled the guitar lick for the song.”

“Been going round and round all day / Bailin’ some hay / And stacking it all up / Can’t wait for the sun to go down / Roll into town / Shined your truck up,” they wrote in the opening lyrics.

“It’s funny …  I was really the only country guy in the room,” Clawson says with a smile. “Dylan’s from New Jersey and Jim grew up in New Orleans. He was actually a college professor in New Orleans when he was in his 20s. We just broke out all the little country things. I’m the guy who grew up on a farm, went to college, came back, farmed with my dad for 15 years, so I can just start listing off stuff.”

“I’m just ready to ride this Chevy, ride this Chevy / Down a little back road / Slide your pretty little self on over / Get a little closer / Turn up the radio / Put your pretty pink toes on the dash / Lean a seat back / Man I swear there ain’t nothin’ looks better than that / Sweet tan, little thing with nothing to do / I wanna take a little ride with you,” they wrote for the lyrics to the ‘Take a Little Ride’ chorus.

“It’s all about a guy working hard all day, and then going into town and picking his girl up,” notes Clawson. “In small towns, there’s just nothing to do. Not that that’s bad. You pick your girl up, and you go drive up and down dirt roads, listening to music and drinking beer. I’ve heard some guys call it ‘dirt road driving.’ That’s what you do.”

Clawson admits that they had Aldean in mind when writing ‘Take a Little Ride’ — and it paid off. “We were actually kind of pointing [the song] toward Aldean [that day],” he says. “He and his producer, Michael Knox, were looking for one or two more things to add to the record, and we thought, ‘We might as well try!’”
