So we were talking in the office today and for some reason we got on the topic of the form of food called...

SHERBET

Yup...the fruity flavored concoction was a hot topic in the office for about 20 minutes. The reason wasn't because it tastes REALLY good.

Nope.

The reason was because of how we pronounce it!

Some people pronounce it SHER-BIT (like myself). While other people (actually the majority of people in the office) call it SHER-BERT.

It's true, you would think it is SHER-BERT because that is how most people, probably 90% of people, say it. But did you know that you've been pronouncing it wrong this entire time? Here's some info off of the Ice Cream Journal website...

"First thing’s first: let’s get the pronunciation down before we proceed. Though it can be spelled as “sherbet” or “sherbert,” most experts agree that the correct pronunciation is “sher-bit” (sounds like “hermit”), not “sher-bert.” Herbert may love sherbet, but not because it rhymes with his name. We know the pronunciation may sound strange. Especially to those who have spent their whole lives pronouncing that second R."

So there you go! Maybe this puts to rest the whole argument concerning the SHERBIT phenomenon of mispronunciation.

Or maybe this will stoke the fire even more.

Either way, maybe we've solved one of life's long mysteries?

How do you pronounce it? Tell us below!
