Hikers Rescued After a Night in Rocky Mountain National Park
Even though three men told their families and rangers they didn't need help getting down Longs Peak, they got it and were likely grateful for it. Alan Smith, Elijah Holmes, and Austin Holmes – from Glen Haven and Estes Park – were stuck on Kieners Route Monday night and had to camp out there until Tuesday.
A park spokeswoman said family members notified park rangers Monday night that the men were overdue. Rangers contacted the men Tuesday morning and they said they did not want assistance.
Because the men were not prepared to spend the night on Longs Peak, rangers decided to conduct a rescue. While the three were not hurt, they were cold, dehydrated, and tired.
Rangers performed technical rescues to get them off the Kieners Route and down the lower section of the North Face on Longs Peak.
