Dog Attacks 7-Year-Old Boy in Greeley

Police were searching for a big, black dog that attacked a 7-year-old boy Monday afternoon in Greeley.

UPDATE: The dog has been found, and the owner and babysitter have both been cited. The babysitter's story (below) is inconsistent with what actually happened. Read about the charges and citations in the Greeley dog attack HERE.

Sgt. Rafael Guitierrez told the Greeley Tribune that the boy was walking to Farr Park with his babysitter and about 3 other children at around 4:50 p.m. when a dog ran up to the boy and began biting him. The dog, possibly a German Shepherd, first tried to get to the bag of snacks the boy was holding.

Guitierrez says the dog came out of nowhere, and the babysitter lost track of where the dog ran off to while she attended to the boy.

The boy was rushed to North Colorado Medical Center with bite wounds to his head and ear. Guitierrez told the Greeley Tribune that, while not superficial, the wounds were not life-threatening.

The boy remained in the hospital by 6:30 p.m. Monday receiving treatment.

Officers continue to search for the dog and, if captured, it will be quarantined for 10 days as a precaution in case of rabies. If it has an owner, there could potentially be municipal charges, Guitierrez told the Greeley Tribune.
