We have had world champions in our community before, the Broncos brought a couple home in the late 90's as did the Northern Colorado Bears football team. But for the first time ever, Northern Colorado has a world champion Mutton Buster! 7-year-old Dimitri Alarcon from Fort Lupton nabbed that at the World Championship Mutton Bustin’ competition at the Big Fresno Fair in California last weekend.

Dimitri beat out 200 other youngsters to win the event’s $5,000 grand prize and a giant trophy.

It all started for Dimitri at last years Greeley Stampede when he first got on the back of sheep for the first time and won. Since then he has traveled all over the country competing in sheep-riding contests. This last month, Dimitri took first at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo to qualify for the world championships in California.

Dimitri practices his mutton busting with two different club teams in the area, and dreams of someday being a bull rider.
