The Greeley Fire Department had to clean up a small hazardous spill at a residence on 13th Street in Greeley. A vial containing two teaspoons of mercury was reportedly knocked over by a “frisky” cat. Being a cat owner, I know this could happen. Our Chudley and Morgan get into everything and they are 16-years-old.

Because it is considered hazardous, first responders requested the assistance of the Greeley Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team.

The Haz Mat Team used a mercury absorbent material and cut out the carpet which had been exposed. The materials were then contained, transported, and disposed of at the Weld County Household Hazardous Waste facility. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.
