Fort Collins Voters Will Decide on Fracking
Voters will get to decide if fracking will be allowed in Fort Collins. An initiative that would impose a five-year moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, within city limits will appear on the Nov. 5th ballot. Yesterday the Fort Collins City Council approved sending the proposal to voters. The council’s only other choice was to approve the initiative’s ordinance as written.
Councilman Wade Troxell said he would actively oppose the ballot issue. A moratorium is only “for show” and would unfairly target the lone oil development company working in the city, he said.
“This potentially could greatly harm Fort Collins,” he said.
Councilwoman Lisa Poppaw said she would vote for the proposal. “I think it’s appropriate to allow the citizens to decide what is right for the community,” she said.
According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, the council is likely to consider a resolution in support or opposition to the moratorium in advance of the election.
