The city of Fort Collins has their police force in the news again, this time as the police chief has abruptly stepped down from his post leading the force.

According to US News, Chief John Hutto announced on Tuesday that he is resigning and his last day will be May 12th. Hutto spent five years on the job leading the police force in Northern Colorado's biggest city. He previously worked for the Austin, Texas Police Department.

An online video that surfaced with Hutto had him stating that it was time to make the change, and that the department faced significant challenges over the past year and a half.

The Coloradoan states that the department has faced an internal racial and ethnic discrimination lawsuit as well as an excessive force settlement that was reached out of court earlier this year.

A nationwide search is being utilized to find the next chief of police.
