Fort Collins is now considering a ban on plastic bags at grocery stores. Following Boulder, Aspen, Basalt, and Telluride, Fort Collins City Council will vote on the measure at the end of November.

Mixed reactions are expected to the idea. Susie Gordon, a Senior Environmental Planner for the City of Fort Collins, will be gathering public data on the idea.

While plastic bags are completely recyclable, most of them do not get recycled and are sent to the landfill where they stay intact for longer than a lot of other solid waste.

The City has held open houses and on-line comments may be submitted on the City’s website at two unique pages:, and Additional information is also available at these sites.

At the Council’s work session on November 27, 2012, staff will present information about both issues - cardboard recycling, and, limitations on single-use shopping bags. Comments and input from the community are being sought before November 16, 2012, for inclusion in the staff report.
