Fern Lake Fire Update – Fire Advancing Slowly
Difficult conditions and terrain hampered the efforts of firefighters to quell the Fern Lake Fire that is burning inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Windy conditions and steep rugged terrain are allowing the fire to slowly advance, according to the Estes Park Trail Gazette.
The fire is now estimated at 400 acres, and moisture is not expected in the area until tomorrow. Along with the possibility of rain on Friday, though, comes increased wind as well. The National Weather Service is predicting a windy Friday, and Friday night those winds could gust as high as 40 miles per hour.
Bear Lake Road, Upper Beaver Meadows Road and Moraine Park Campground are closed. Trails west of Bear Lake Road and south of Trail Ridge Road are also closed. Smoke is visible in Estes Park.
Smoking and open fires in Rocky Mountain National Park's backcountry are now prohibited.
